The American Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units from Gackle, Streeter, Fredonia, and Kulm joined forces to host a significant Veterans Day community event at the Gackle Legion Hall on November 11, 2023. This gathering brought together approximately 100 attendees, who enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving dinner catered by Dani’s Place, along with delicious pumpkin and apple bars prepared by members of the local Auxiliaries.

Following the meal, the event featured a program that celebrated the contributions of veterans and the spirit of community. Jon Metz, Commander of Gackle Legion Post No. 250, welcomed guests and initiated the gathering with the Pledge of Allegiance. The solemnity of the occasion was further enhanced by Chaplain Dave Paulson, who offered prayers in remembrance of those who have served.

Local students from Gackle-Streeter School played a vital role in the program. Bridger Rivinius, who attended the Legion Boys State event in June, shared his experiences with the audience. Another student, Myles Martin, showcased his musical talent by performing “Yankee Doodle Boy” on the alto saxophone, accompanied by music instructor Corinne Muller.

One of the poignant moments of the event came when Marella Koenig, a member of the Gackle Auxiliary, elaborated on the significance of the Missing Man Table setting, which honors fallen soldiers. The importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by service members resonated throughout the evening.

Veteran Randy Entzminger also contributed to the program with a presentation titled “Basic Training … The Adventure Begins,” sharing insights from his own military experience. The evening concluded with the recognition of the 2025 State Poppy Poster winners: Jenna Homola, Courtney Remboldt, and Emma Heller, celebrating their artistic contributions to veterans’ awareness.

As the event wrapped up, guests were treated to a musical accompaniment by pianist Sharon Schlittenhard, who led the assembly in singing “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” To express gratitude, veterans received homemade cards crafted by elementary students from Gackle-Streeter, adding a personal touch to the evening.

This Veterans Day event not only honored those who have served but also fostered a sense of community and connection among the residents of the Jamestown area. Through shared meals, heartfelt speeches, and musical performances, the gathering highlighted the importance of remembering and supporting veterans, ensuring their sacrifices remain recognized and appreciated.
