A hiker was successfully rescued from Mount Bierstadt, a well-known fourteener west of Denver, after sustaining a leg injury during his ascent. The incident occurred on March 18, 2024, when the Alpine Rescue Team responded around 15:00 local time to assist the injured individual, who had fallen just below the summit of the mountain, which is located near Guanella Pass, approximately 56 miles from Denver.

Due to severe weather conditions, including wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph, efforts to airlift the hiker were thwarted. Rescuers from the Alpine Rescue Team, along with members from Arapahoe Rescue Patrol and Park County Search and Rescue, undertook the challenging task of climbing 2,500 feet on foot to reach the hiker. Clear Creek Fire Authority and Emergency Medical Services also provided support during the operation.

Rescue team officials noted that this marked their second rescue operation on Mount Bierstadt within a two-day span. While they did not disclose specific details regarding the prior rescue, they emphasized the importance of preparedness for hikers, especially during this season when trails can be icy and temperatures can drop significantly.

The man who was rescued was equipped with warm clothing, food, and water, which helped him endure the lengthy nine-hour operation until he could be safely brought down from the mountain. All rescuers had successfully exited the field by midnight, concluding a strenuous and complex operation.

As hiking season approaches, officials urge outdoor enthusiasts to be vigilant about changing weather conditions and to ensure they are well-prepared for challenging terrain.
