Guam Memorial Hospital Celebrates Nursing Excellence with DAISY Awards
On November 18, 2023, the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) held its inaugural DAISY Award ceremony to honor 33 exemplary nurses who have significantly impacted the local community. The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who consistently deliver compassionate and skillful care, as highlighted in a press release from GMHA.
During the event, Interim GMHA Administrator Dr. Joleen Aguon emphasized the importance of these nurses, stating, “Today’s nominees were remembered because someone felt truly cared for. That is powerful.” She noted that each nurse embodies the hospital’s mission, expressing gratitude for their compassion and resilience, particularly during challenging times for patients and their families.
One standout recipient, Danica Dianzon, a staff nurse in the intensive care unit, was named the first DAISY Award honoree. “I’m overwhelmed and grateful for everybody who helped me get this award,” said Dianzon, who began working at GMH just last year. “It takes the whole team. They have helped me grow and get here. Thank you.” A graduate of the University of Guam in 2024, Dianzon has gained admiration for her positive attitude and dedication to patient care.
The DAISY Award initiative aims to foster a culture of gratitude within healthcare settings, enhancing the work environment and elevating patient care standards. The 33 nominated nurses represent various departments across GMH, including the intensive care unit, progressive care unit, radiology, special services, surgical unit, labor and delivery, and neonatal intensive care unit.
GMHA noted that the DAISY Award reflects its commitment to supporting and retaining its nursing workforce, which is vital to the hospital’s patient care mission.
During the ceremony, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, who is also a nurse, addressed the nominees, acknowledging the challenges they face. “Nursing is a calling that demands skill, compassion, and enormous heart, and each of you embodies those qualities every day,” she stated. “Thank you for the care you provide, the comfort you bring to our patients and families, and the strength you show in even the toughest moments.”
Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio echoed the governor’s sentiments, highlighting the significance of their work: “You care for our community in its most vulnerable moments, and you do it with grace, commitment, and humanity. Today’s celebration is a reminder of just how vital you are to our hospital and to our island.”
The DAISY Award ceremony serves as a powerful recognition of the dedication and expertise that nurses bring to healthcare, reinforcing the critical role they play in ensuring quality patient care within the Guam community.
