Esteemed Engineer and Community Leader Marvin Ehlers Passes Away at 93
Marvin Ehlers, a respected engineer and dedicated community leader, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, at the age of 93. His death marks the end of a life rich in both professional accomplishments and personal connections. Born on October 16, 1932, in LaMoille, Illinois, Marvin was the son of Walter and Gladys Ehlers, both of whom preceded him in death.
Marvin is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Ehlers (née Baudino), and their three sons, Steve (Cathy), Bruce (Beth), and Brian (Sue). His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Laura, Kristin (Brandon), Tori (Ryan), Katie, Jenni, Matthew, and Zachary (Dana), as well as his great-grandson, Cooper. He also leaves behind his brother Norman (Martha) and several nieces and nephews. Marvin was preceded in death by his grandson, Scott Ehlers.
Professional Achievements and Community Service
Marvin’s career was marked by a commitment to innovation and leadership. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from the University of Illinois and later obtained an MBA from the University of Chicago. His professional journey began in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Base Engineering Officer for over two years.
Following his military service, Marvin held several prominent positions, including Corporate Director of Information Systems at Smith International and Vice President of Information Systems at the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America. His expertise and leadership left a lasting impact on the organizations he served.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Marvin was deeply committed to his community. He served as an elected member of the board for the Deerfield–Riverwoods Elementary School District 110 and later as an elected Trustee for the Village of Deerfield. His passion for history led him to the role of President of the Illinois State Historical Society, where he actively promoted historical awareness and preservation.

Marvin Ehlers’ contributions to both his field and his community will be remembered fondly by those who knew him.
