Covington’s Saturday Night Community Dinner Seeks New Location
The Saturday Night Community Dinner in Covington, KY, is facing an uncertain future after nearly 25 years of providing essential services to the local community. The dinner, which has been a reliable source of warm meals and companionship for those in need, is now searching for a new home following the decision by First Christian Church to sell its building, where the dinner has been held since its inception. The church will only retain the space until the end of 2023.
Impact of the Community Dinner
Established through a partnership among local congregations and volunteers, the Saturday Night Community Dinner serves as a lifeline for many residents facing challenges such as homelessness, financial hardship, and mental illness. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the program regularly welcomed between 100 and 120 diners each week. Currently, attendance has decreased to approximately 50 to 60 guests, yet the need remains significant.
During each Saturday gathering at 5:30 PM, participants not only receive a hearty meal—often two—but also access to essential amenities, such as a warm indoor environment and restrooms. Organizers emphasize the importance of treating all guests with dignity and respect. As one team member stated, “Our guests are seen as God’s beloved—fully human and worthy of care, respect, and compassion.” The commitment to this ministry is unwavering: “This ministry won’t stop until the day every person in Covington has enough. Until then, we keep showing up.”
Urgent Call for Assistance
In light of the impending relocation, the partner churches are urgently seeking a new venue that meets specific criteria to continue this vital service. A suitable location should ideally be situated along or near the Madison Avenue corridor, ensuring accessibility for guests who often rely on public transportation. Key requirements include a certified kitchen and sufficient seating for 60 to 80 people. Additionally, features such as ADA compliance and climate control are highly preferred.
The following community partners are currently involved in this effort:
- Bulletsville Christian Church (DOC)
- Trinity Episcopal Church
- Crescent Springs Presbyterian
- Lakeside Presbyterian
- First Christian Church, Covington (DOC)
- Milford Christian Church
- Erlanger Christian Church (DOC)
- Numerous families, neighbors, and volunteers
More partners are encouraged to join the initiative, as participation is not limited to church organizations.

Individuals or organizations with leads on a suitable space or those interested in volunteering are urged to reach out for support. The primary contact for inquiries is Sheri at First Christian Church, reachable by phone at 859-431-3904 or via email at [email protected].
The community’s involvement is crucial in ensuring that this longstanding program can continue to serve those in need. With the ongoing support of local residents and organizations, the Saturday Night Community Dinner aims to find a new home and maintain its mission of hospitality and hope for the vulnerable populations in Covington.
