Castle Noel Unveils Starlight Room Restaurant in Medina
Castle Noel, a Christmas-themed museum located in Medina, Ohio, has expanded its offerings with the opening of the Starlight Room restaurant. The official launch took place on December 8, 2023, featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local dignitaries, including Medina Mayor Dennis Hanwell and members of the city council.
The Starlight Room is the latest addition to Castle Noel, which has been delighting visitors since its inception in 2013. Owned by Mark Claus, the museum showcases an array of holiday artifacts, movie memorabilia, and festive decorations. Claus, whose name reflects his festive spirit, has often been described as resembling a vintage Santa, a sentiment echoed by Kimberly Marshall, Medina’s economic development director.
Claus expressed his long-standing vision for the restaurant, saying, “This is a family project, and it grows every year.” He emphasized that the idea of a dining experience within the museum has been a dream he nurtured over several years. “Every year after Christmas I buy a stove, buy a hood, buy a this, buy a that,” he remarked, indicating the gradual evolution of the Starlight Room.
10,000 Lights Illuminate the Dining Experience
The highlight of the Starlight Room is undoubtedly the stunning ceiling display featuring 10,000 lights. This captivating light show synchronizes with different musical tracks every 15 minutes, enhancing the festive atmosphere. Claus noted, “It just adds to the magic of the whole experience,” as he continuously seeks to improve and innovate the attraction.
The restaurant offers a diverse menu, including burgers, paninis, salads, and a special menu for children, dubbed “elves in training.” Many dishes draw inspiration from beloved Christmas characters, such as the Cindy Lou Who Caprese from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” The ambiance is designed to be cozy and casual, adorned with tasteful holiday decorations and framed vintage magazine ads.
In creating the Starlight Room, Claus has also renovated the outdoor space, which features heated concrete near the indoor dining area and an outdoor stage. He aims to provide a resort-like feel, encouraging visitors to enjoy both the restaurant and the festive courtyard, which showcases Cousin Eddie’s motor home from the classic film “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”
Community Impact and Future Aspirations
Since its opening, Castle Noel has become a significant asset to the local community, with Claus consistently investing in the property. Marshall pointed out that Claus has been dedicated to enhancing the museum and its surroundings. Reflecting on the day he purchased the building, Claus shared a poignant memory of standing outside with his wife, Dana, as snow fell softly around them. “That’s where our home is now,” he recalled.
As the Starlight Room begins welcoming guests, it represents not just a dining option but a continuation of Claus’s vision to create lasting memories for families and friends. “It’s all about the memories,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of shared experiences during the holiday season.
Castle Noel is located at 260 S. Court St., Medina, just off Medina Square. It offers both public and private tours, with admission fees varying and discounts available.
