Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School Marks 50 Years with Community Celebration
Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School celebrated its 50th anniversary on November 21 with a vibrant community powwow that brought together students, families, and local residents. The event featured traditional ceremonies, dance competitions, and a heartfelt tribute to a long-serving staff member.
The celebration commenced with the Leech Lake Honor Guard, which led the grand entry and posted colors, setting a solemn and respectful tone. Attendees enjoyed a range of activities throughout the afternoon, including intertribals and spot dances, which invited participation from community members and showcased the rich cultural heritage of the area.
One of the highlights was the Woodlands Dance Contest, sponsored by staff members Gerald White and Kaiden Urrutia, both of whom are accomplished dancers in the Woodlands style. Their contribution emphasized the importance of preserving and sharing traditional dance forms with younger generations, creating a sense of continuity within the community.
As part of the anniversary festivities, John Parmeter was honored for his significant contributions to the school over the past 35 years. He received a plaque, a blanket, and an honor song, recognizing his dedication and service in various roles throughout his tenure. This acknowledgment not only celebrated Parmeter’s commitment but also highlighted the strong ties that exist within the school and the local community.
The event served as a reminder of the school’s enduring mission to provide quality education while fostering cultural pride and community engagement. As Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School looks ahead to the future, it remains committed to enriching the lives of its students and honoring its traditions.
