1,435 Couples Set New Record with Simultaneous Kiss in D.C.
A record-breaking event took place in Washington, D.C., as 1,435 couples simultaneously kissed for five seconds beneath the National Mistletoe on December 13, 2023. This impressive feat set a new title in the Guinness World Records for the most couples kissing under mistletoe at a single venue.
The event, organized by the DowntownDC Business Improvement District, unfolded at Anthem Row, featuring a stunning 10-foot installation of mistletoe adorned with greenery, ribbons, and a jingle bell, suspended 30 feet above the ground. Representatives from Guinness World Records were present to officially verify and certify the achievement.
Previously, the record was held by Anheuser-Busch, which saw 480 couples kiss at an event in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2019. Gerren Price, President and CEO of DowntownDC, expressed pride in the accomplishment, stating, “Breaking a Guinness World Record title is an incredible moment for DowntownDC, but what’s even more meaningful is seeing our community gather and celebrate in the heart of the district.”
The kissing event occurred at 16:15 local time and was part of a larger celebration that included live performances by the Ellington Carthan Quartet, interactive art displays, photo booths, and food and beverages provided by City Tap House and Root & Vine. The festivities were hosted by Sherrell Duncan from WPGC 95.5 and Rod Hendrix from 94.7 The Drive.
This year marked the second installation of the National Mistletoe at Anthem Row, designed by multi-disciplinary artist My Ly Design. The installation has transformed the downtown area into a festive haven, fostering connections and creating joyful moments for those who participated.
The event not only celebrated love but also underscored the vibrancy and community spirit of Washington, D.C. As couples gathered beneath the mistletoe to partake in this unique experience, the atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy, exemplifying the holiday spirit that the installation aims to evoke.
In an era when moments of connection are increasingly cherished, the successful attempt to break this record serves as a reminder of the power of community and shared experiences.
