New Orleans Expands Vaccine Access for Flu and COVID-19 Ahead of Season
As flu season approaches, New Orleans is enhancing access to vaccines for both influenza and COVID-19. The New Orleans Health Department (NOHD) has announced that vaccinations are now widely available, ensuring residents can protect themselves from these illnesses as well as other respiratory viruses.
Vaccination Recommendations and Availability
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that influenza vaccinations are available for anyone older than six months. Additionally, as of September 28, 2025, COVID-19 vaccinations have been added to the recommended schedule for the upcoming 2025-2026 season. This rollout specifically targets adults and high-risk groups, alongside vaccines for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pneumonia, and shingles.
Dr. Jennifer Avegno, Health Director of the NOHD, emphasized the importance of these updates in a recent press release: “These updated recommendations make it easier for everyone to protect themselves and their families from flu and COVID-19.” The department aims to promote public health while ensuring that vaccines remain safe and free for most individuals.
Convenient Access Through Local Pharmacies
Pharmacy chain Walgreens is playing a significant role in this vaccination effort. According to Brian Strong, Director of Immunizations at Walgreens, “Walgreens is proud to offer the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccines in Louisiana to eligible individuals ages three and older, no prescription required.” This initiative enables residents to receive their vaccinations through various convenient methods, including walk-ins at any Walgreens pharmacy, online appointment scheduling, app usage, and even by calling or texting a dedicated hotline.
The CDC advises adults to consult with healthcare professionals to determine whether the COVID-19 vaccine is appropriate for them. Parents of children under 18 are encouraged to reach out to their pediatricians or local pharmacies for guidance. Importantly, the NOHD has confirmed that prescriptions are no longer necessary to access COVID-19 vaccines at pharmacies or vaccination events. Furthermore, it is expected that insurance coverage will continue to mitigate any potential out-of-pocket expenses for individuals seeking these vaccinations.
With these efforts, New Orleans is proactively addressing public health concerns as flu and COVID-19 seasons approach, making it easier for residents to stay healthy and safe. The focus remains on accessibility and convenience, with local health authorities urging everyone to take advantage of the available resources.
