Kennedy Krieger Institute Secures $5.5 Million for Pediatric Cancer Research
The Kennedy Krieger Institute has received a significant anonymous donation of $5.5 million to advance its research in pediatric cancer. This funding will support a team of researchers focused on enhancing the brain health of children diagnosed with brain tumors. The initiative aims to address the often-overlooked cognitive challenges faced by these young patients, which can persist even after treatment.
Neuropsychologist Rachel Peterson, one of the lead researchers, emphasized the transformative potential of the program in a statement released on November 19, 2023. “This program has the potential to transform the quality of life for children with brain tumors,” Peterson stated. “By shining a light on cognitive changes, often an invisible disability for these patients, we are addressing a critical need and investing in meaningful solutions.”
Children undergoing treatment for brain cancer frequently experience difficulties with attention and processing speed, according to the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. These cognitive impairments can significantly affect their daily lives and overall well-being.
Innovative Neurorehabilitation Program Launched
The donation will fund a novel neurorehabilitation program led by Peterson and her colleague, Dr. Stacy Suskauer. This three-year initiative will implement personalized and adaptive interventions aimed at improving brain health from the point of diagnosis onward. By tailoring approaches to individual needs, the researchers hope to create effective strategies that can enhance cognitive function and quality of life for affected children.
“This partnership formed with the goal of advancing care for children with brain tumors is incredibly exciting,” Suskauer remarked. “It reflects what makes Kennedy Krieger special and our commitment to building innovative partnerships with other world-class institutions.”
The funding is part of a broader investment by a donor family totaling $40 million. This investment aims to foster collaboration in cancer care research, which includes contributions to the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Radiation Oncology Research Center at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, along with affiliations with Children’s National Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Massachusetts General Hospital.
The Kennedy Krieger Institute continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing pediatric health outcomes through innovative research and collaborative efforts. With the support of this generous donation, researchers are poised to make significant strides in understanding and addressing the cognitive challenges that young cancer patients face.
