Andy Dick Blames Fentanyl for Near-Overdose in Hollywood
Comedian Andy Dick has attributed his recent medical emergency in Hollywood to fentanyl rather than crack cocaine. A video showing Dick slumped over and unresponsive led to widespread concern when it circulated this week. Following the incident, he insisted he is “110 percent” fine and has been vocal about his experience.
In an interview with the New York Post on March 15, 2024, Dick expressed his belief that fentanyl was responsible for his apparent overdose. He claimed paramedics informed his friends that the synthetic opioid was the probable cause of his condition. “That’s the only thing that can kill you that quickly, like I just dropped,” he stated.
Details of the Incident
The incident reportedly occurred on March 12, 2024, while Dick was socializing with friends. He described a moment when he was approached by a stranger who appeared to be in distress. Feeling empathetic towards the individual, Dick admitted to briefly stepping away to use drugs. “There was a guy that was my age and I felt for him… and then he whipped out [what looked like] crack,” he recounted to TMZ. After using the substance, Dick claimed he “just dropped.”
Shawn Harrell, a bystander who witnessed the scene, described Dick’s condition as alarming. Harrell noted, “He was blue. His hands were blue and his face was blue. His body was limp. It was like deadweight… I thought he passed away.” Fortunately, emergency responders administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, allowing Dick to regain consciousness.
Despite the severity of the situation, Dick did not require hospital transport and left the scene with a friend. A friend present during the incident described the effort to revive Dick as a “group effort.”
Controversial Remarks and History
In his comments regarding crack cocaine, Dick clarified that his remarks were intended as humor. “I jokingly said ‘a little crack every now and then [is] not gonna kill anybody,’ but it killed me,” he told the New York Post. “It killed me. I died, you know, my lips turned purple.”
Andy Dick has a complicated history with substance abuse, marked by multiple incidents involving drugs and alcohol. He has faced legal issues, including arrests for public intoxication and sexual misconduct. Recent reports suggest that while he indulges in alcohol, he engages less frequently in drug use.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with substance use, particularly concerning the rising prevalence of fentanyl in illicit drugs. As Dick continues to navigate his challenges, the focus remains on the potential risks that accompany such behaviors.
