The Outer Worlds 2 Director Discusses Capitalism and Game Themes
The director of The Outer Worlds 2, Brandon Adler, recently addressed the game’s themes of capitalist satire during an appearance on the My Perfect Console podcast. He emphasized that the game is not intended to be preachy but aims to explore the absurdities of power structures in a humorous way. Adler noted that the ongoing nature of these themes resonates with players because they reflect real-world issues that persist over time.
Adler clarified that there has been no conflict between the development team at Obsidian Entertainment and Microsoft, which published the game. He stated, “To Microsoft’s benefit, they never once said, ‘you can’t say that,'” highlighting the freedom the developers experienced during the game’s creation. This lack of interference allowed the team to craft a narrative that engages with the negative aspects of capitalism without directly targeting any specific moment or corporation, including Microsoft.
The game is structured to present various factions, such as the authoritarian Protectorate and the religious Order of the Ascendant. Adler explained that the intention was not to critique current events directly but to explore the underlying philosophies of power and exploitation. “These are problems that have existed forever,” he commented, noting that players often see connections to contemporary issues because they are recurrent.
Adler described the game as a satire that examines how corporations exploit both workers and consumers. He stated, “We’re looking at corporations taken to the extreme – what does that actually mean?” The team aims to present these themes through an absurdist lens, encouraging players to reflect on the normalcy of such exploitation in the game world.
The creative director, Leonard Boyarsky, has emphasized the importance of allowing players to draw their own conclusions from the scenarios presented. According to Adler, “I don’t like, necessarily, for video games to come off as preachy… We are presenting a scenario, and we are showing how we think that this would play out.” This approach has led to varied interpretations among players, some labeling the game as anti-capitalist, while others argue it critiques communism.
As the team developed The Outer Worlds 2, Adler expressed surprise at being acquired by a large corporation while tackling themes of corporate greed. He acknowledged that this juxtaposition added an intriguing layer to the game’s narrative. The developers continue to create a space where players can engage with these complex themes in a meaningful way.
