Renowned Soprano Margaret Jane Wray Passes Away at 62
Margaret Jane Wray, the celebrated American dramatic soprano, passed away on December 2, 2025, at the age of 62. Her contributions to the world of opera have left an indelible mark, from her early days with the Metropolitan Opera to her performances on stages worldwide.
Born on December 17, 1962, Wray began her illustrious career in the mid to late 1980s as a participant in the Metropolitan Opera’s Young Artist program. She garnered significant recognition when she won the Richard Tucker Award in 1989. Her professional debut at the Met came in 1987, when she took the role of Annina in Verdi’s “La Traviata” at only 25 years old.
Throughout her career, Wray performed 92 times with the Metropolitan Opera, showcasing her impressive vocal range in productions such as “Die Walküre,” “Aida,” “Götterdämmerung,” “Lohengrin,” “Il Trovatore,” “Rigoletto,” “Idomeneo,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “Il Barbiere di Siviglia.” Her portrayals of Wagnerian characters, particularly Sieglinde in “Die Walküre,” solidified her reputation as a leading soprano.
Wray’s talents extended beyond the Metropolitan Opera. She graced the stages of prestigious companies including Teatro alla Scala, Bayerische Staatsoper, Berlin State Opera, Opéra National de Paris, and Welsh National Opera, among others. Throughout her career, she collaborated with notable conductors such as Kurt Masur, Daniel Barenboim, and Riccardo Muti, and shared the stage with legendary artists like Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle.
Wray continued to perform until 2013, after which she transitioned into education, becoming a voice teacher at the Phipps Center for the Arts. Additionally, she served as a board member for the St. Croix Valley Opera, contributing her expertise to the next generation of singers.
Her passing marks the end of an era in the opera community, leaving behind a legacy of passion, artistry, and mentorship. Wray’s influence will be felt for years to come, inspiring future artists to pursue their dreams in the world of opera.
