New Romance Bookstore Finney’s Opens in East Austin on December 13
A new chapter in the world of literature is set to unfold in East Austin with the grand opening of Finney’s Books on December 13, 2023. This independent bookstore, located at 3823 Airport Blvd., #D, aims to celebrate the vibrant and diverse genre of romance literature, appealing to readers from all walks of life.
The rise in popularity of romance novels can be attributed to various factors, including the influence of BookTok and a growing appreciation for the genre’s ability to provide escapism amidst challenging times. According to consumer research company Circana, romance sales have doubled since 2021 and are expected to continue this upward trend, with a notable presence in fiction bestsellers lists.
Cameron Lagrone, the owner of Finney’s Books, expressed her passion for the genre on the store’s website. She noted, “In the last couple of years, like so many folks around me, I discovered the absolute JOY to be found in romance books. What I once thought of as outdated regressive stories have instead been a place where I’ve found stories that celebrate love and pleasure in all their forms.”
Celebrating Diversity in Romance
Finney’s Books aims to provide a “welcoming and safe space for romance readers of all identities.” The store will offer a wide range of titles, from “sweet contemporary romances with a hint of spice” to more adventurous adult works that embrace drama and passion. The focus on tropes in romance literature is a unique aspect of the store’s philosophy, encouraging readers to indulge in the genre without hesitation.
The bookstore is named after Lagrone’s dog, who has a fondness for audiobooks. In her mission to promote romance literature, Lagrone emphasizes the importance of representation, especially for queer stories. She highlighted the expanding catalog of queer love stories, celebrating the idea that love transcends boundaries.
Grand Opening Festivities
The grand opening celebration promises an engaging experience for attendees. Scheduled for Saturday, December 13, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the event will feature coffee from Please Stay Coffee and baked goods from The AniCakes Co.. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments while exploring the bookstore’s offerings.
The first 25 visitors will receive a free branded tote bag, while those who purchase a book will gain entry into a giveaway for signed books and “bookish merch bundles.” Attendees will also receive bookmarks while supplies last, adding to the excitement of the day.
Finney’s Books is conveniently located at the corner of Airport Boulevard and 38th 1/2, with an onsite parking lot and additional street parking along 38th 1/2 and Anchor Lane.
With its focus on community and a love for romance, Finney’s Books is poised to become a beloved destination for readers in Austin and beyond, reinforcing the genre’s enduring appeal.
