Netflix’s ‘Last Samurai Standing’ Creator Hints at Future Seasons
The newly released series Last Samurai Standing has quickly captured audience attention on Netflix, debuting at #2 on the platform’s Top 10 Non-English shows list within a week of its launch. Its creator, Michihito Fujii, suggests that the historical drama, which draws parallels to the immensely popular Squid Game, has the potential for additional seasons, despite no official announcements regarding a second season.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Fujii expressed optimism about the future of the show. He believes there is room for two or three more seasons to further explore the narrative of the main character, Shujiro Saga. The first season concludes with significant developments, including the death of Toshimichi Okubo and the revelation of malicious motives behind the deadly competition known as Kodoku. Fujii emphasized the challenge of maintaining audience engagement over multiple seasons, stating, “Sometimes future seasons happen two or three years later, and viewers forget what happened in the past.” He aims to deliver a cohesive story within each season.
Set against the backdrop of the Meiji Era, Last Samurai Standing follows Shujiro, portrayed by Junichi Okada, as he competes in a high-stakes contest in Kyoto. The grand prize of ¥100,000 motivates him to enter the competition in hopes of supporting his ailing wife and children. However, he soon discovers that the contest involves lethal combat among samurai, raising the stakes of his participation dramatically.
As viewers eagerly await potential future installments, those interested in similar themes can explore Netflix’s catalog. Titles such as Squid Game and Alice in Borderland offer similar narratives involving life-or-death competitions. Additionally, the acclaimed historical drama Shogun, based on James Clavell‘s novel, provides insights into samurai-era politics, though it does not feature deadly games.
The first season of Last Samurai Standing is now available for streaming on Netflix, with all six episodes accessible to subscribers. As the series garners more attention, fans hope for updates on its future directions.
