Keith Thibodeaux Reflects on His I Love Lucy Experience
Keith Thibodeaux, the last living star of the iconic sitcom I Love Lucy, recently shared heartfelt memories from his time on the show during an appearance on the new CW special TV We Love. Thibodeaux, who portrayed Little Ricky, the son of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, expressed admiration for his on-screen parents and the relationships he developed while working on the landmark series.
Reflecting on his childhood experiences, Thibodeaux, credited as Richard Keith, revealed that both Ball and Arnaz treated him as if he were their own child. He joined the series at the tender age of four, and even now, he recalls the details of his time working with the legendary couple. “They introduced me to their children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., who I became really good friends with as a kid. We grew up together,” he said.
The actor also highlighted the pressures of being part of a show that was at the height of its popularity. “Lucy was very demanding of everybody being right on cue,” Thibodeaux noted. In contrast, he spoke fondly of Desi Arnaz’s mentorship, recalling how he taught him to fish, ride horses, and swim. “I had a heart for him,” he added.
Memorable Performances and Challenges
One standout moment in Thibodeaux’s career came during Episode 9 of the show’s final season, titled “The Ricardos Visit Cuba.” In this episode, he was tasked with playing the conga drums, a challenging feat for a young child. “It’s a lot of pressure for a little kid,” he admitted. “I did other shows after that, but this was the big one, in front of a live audience. You did one take, and that was it.”
Thibodeaux recalled the physical toll of the performance, stating, “It hurt my hand so much to do, because I wasn’t used to doing that, playing the congas.” Despite the challenges, his contributions helped solidify the show’s legacy and his own place in television history.
As the last surviving star of a series that premiered in 1951, Thibodeaux’s reflections provide a unique glimpse into the behind-the-scenes dynamics of I Love Lucy. His stories serve as a reminder of the relationships and experiences that shaped not only his life but also the cultural landscape of television.
Through his memories, viewers gain insight into the warmth and creativity that characterized the production, making I Love Lucy a beloved classic that continues to resonate with audiences today.
