James L. Brooks Returns to Direct with ‘Ella McCay’ on December 12
Renowned filmmaker James L. Brooks returns to the director’s chair with his latest film, Ella McCay, set to premiere in theaters on December 12, 2023. This marks Brooks’ first directorial effort in 15 years, following a celebrated career that includes iconic works such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Terms of Endearment, for which he won three Academy Awards.
The film stars Emma Mackey as Ella, a 34-year-old lieutenant governor in an unnamed state during 2008. Ella is on the brink of becoming governor when Governor Bill, portrayed by Albert Brooks, is selected for a position in the president’s Cabinet. However, her anticipated success is overshadowed by the challenges posed by her husband, Ryan (played by Jack Lowden), her agoraphobic brother, Casey (Spike Fearn), and her unfaithful father, Eddie (Woody Harrelson).
Plot Overview and Character Dynamics
The narrative unfolds over a few days, capturing Ella’s journey as she navigates the complexities of governance, family distractions, and public expectations. Despite the turmoil around her, Ella maintains her optimistic outlook, supported by her aunt Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis), her assistant Estelle (Julie Kavner), and her police escort, Trooper Nash (Kumail Nanjiani).
While Brooks attempts to weave a story that reflects both personal and political challenges, critics note that the film often loses its focus. The dynamics between Ella and her brother and father, while significant, receive limited exploration, leaving their impact on her life feeling underdeveloped. A subplot involving Casey’s efforts to win back his girlfriend, Susan (Ayo Edebiri), adds further complexity, but ultimately distracts from the main narrative.
The political themes in Ella McCay struggle to find clarity. Although there are hints that Ella and Governor Bill align with Democratic values, particularly through a program aimed at assisting mothers, the film does not effectively articulate its political stance. Scenes depicting Ella boring her fellow lawmakers further complicate her character, raising questions about how audiences are meant to engage with her journey.
Performances and Direction
Despite the film’s narrative shortcomings, the performances of Mackey and Curtis stand out. Mackey, known for her role in the Netflix series Sex Education, brings a compelling confidence to her character, ensuring that Ella remains relatable and engaging even amidst the film’s weaker moments. Curtis, known for her dynamic performances, adopts a more subdued approach, providing a comforting presence for Ella when she faces adversity.
Brooks appears to prioritize the development of his female characters, with Kavner delivering much of the film’s humor, despite serving as a somewhat unnecessary narrator. In contrast, Harrelson’s character lacks depth, and both Fearn and Lowden’s performances fall flat, potentially due to the limitations of their roles.
While James L. Brooks is celebrated for his extensive contributions to television and film, Ella McCay does not reach the heights of his previous works. Nonetheless, Mackey’s performance emerges as a highlight, showcasing her capability as a leading actress in a film that, without her, might struggle to maintain viewer interest.
