De La Soul Celebrates New Album with Energetic Late-Night Performance
De La Soul performed a vibrant medley of songs from their latest album, Cabin in the Sky, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on November 25, 2023. This marks the iconic hip-hop group’s first album since the passing of David “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur, who died unexpectedly earlier this year. The album features previously unreleased vocal tracks from Jolicoeur, blending nostalgia with fresh content for fans.
The live performance included the tracks “Run It Back” and “The Package,” both of which showcased the group’s signature style. The latter song featured a lively brass section and captivating visuals inspired by the album’s celestial cover art. The energy of the performance resonated with both the studio audience and viewers at home, reflecting the enduring legacy of De La Soul.
In a recent interview with Billboard, band members Kelvin “Posdnuos” Mercer and Vincent “Maseo” Mason expressed their pride in the new album. Mercer shared, “I’m feeling absolutely beautiful. I’m really happy and proud of this album, proud of all we’ve accomplished.” He emphasized the emotional significance of the album, noting that it is the first project without Jolicoeur. Mercer remarked, “I feel strongly about this album obviously because it’s the first album we’ve done without Dave… his spirit, his energy, it’s very much a part of this album.”
Mason echoed these sentiments, highlighting the band’s commitment to honoring their late member through their music. The duo believes that fans will appreciate the heartfelt nature of Cabin in the Sky, which they describe as a true reflection of their journey together.
Looking ahead, De La Soul has announced an upcoming tour, with a headline performance scheduled for February 27, 2026, at the Droppin’ Science hip-hop night in Melbourne, Australia. Additionally, they will perform at the Old But Gold Festival in Hamburg, Germany, on July 26, 2024. Fans are eager for the opportunity to see the group live and experience their unique blend of creativity and musical innovation.
As the holiday season draws near, De La Soul’s new album serves as a reminder of the joy and resilience found in music, even in the face of loss. The performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live not only celebrated their new work but also honored the enduring legacy of their beloved bandmate. The excitement surrounding Cabin in the Sky sets a hopeful tone for the coming year.
