HD Hyundai Secures $1.5 Billion Order for Dual-Fuel Containerships
South Korean shipbuilding leader, HD Hyundai, has confirmed a monumental contract valued at 2.13 trillion won (approximately $1.5 billion) to construct eight dual-fuel containerships for the shipping company HMM. This agreement marks the largest order for containerships since the shipbuilding boom of 2007 and reflects a renewed demand for advanced maritime vessels.
The contract, confirmed by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, involves the construction of eight vessels, each with a capacity of 13,400 TEU. These ships will measure 337 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and 27.9 meters in height. Designed with LNG dual-fuel propulsion engines, the vessels will feature fuel tanks that are roughly 50% larger than standard designs, enhancing their operational efficiency significantly.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will oversee the construction of two of the vessels, while the remaining six will be built by HD Hyundai Samho. Deliveries are scheduled to take place sequentially through the first half of 2029, allowing for a steady influx of new ships into HMM’s fleet.
The recent order has elevated HD Hyundai’s backlog of containerships to its highest level since 2007, a year when global cargo volume reached a peak of 793,473 TEU. In total, HD Hyundai has secured 69 containerships this year, amounting to 720,000 TEU ordered, making it the leading domestic shipbuilder in South Korea.
The company’s competitive edge lies not only in construction costs but also in its focus on lifecycle economics. HD Hyundai’s vessels, despite having higher initial prices compared to competitors, are touted for their superior long-term operational savings. Since 2023, HD Hyundai has integrated the HiNAS Control system, an autonomous navigation assistance technology developed by Avicus. This system has successfully demonstrated a 15% reduction in carbon emissions and a 15% increase in fuel efficiency based on real-world operating data.
An official from HD Hyundai stated, “We are further solidifying our position in the global market based on differentiated technology and customer trust.” The company aims to continue leading the shipbuilding and shipping industries towards decarbonization through its focus on environmentally friendly and high-efficiency designs.
This contract is not just a financial milestone for HD Hyundai; it also represents a critical response to the maritime industry’s increasing pressure to reduce emissions while maintaining efficiency on extended trade routes. As global shipping continues to evolve, HD Hyundai’s commitment to innovation positions it well to meet future challenges and demands in the sector.
