Tens of Thousands Prepare to Fly from Upstate NY for Thanksgiving
UPDATE: This Thanksgiving is set to become the busiest travel period in 15 years, as tens of thousands of travelers are expected to jet out of upstate New York airports. With the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently lifting flight restrictions, airports are gearing up for an unprecedented surge in passenger numbers.
Today, Wednesday, November 22, 2023, marks one of the peak travel days, with over 5,000 passengers expected to depart from the Albany International Airport alone, according to Matt Hunter, the airport’s director of communications. Incoming flights are projected to match this influx, highlighting the urgency of holiday travel.
Among the millions traveling, the Frazier family—AJ, MJ, and their father Jason—are part of the over 17.8 million people taking to the skies this holiday season. “We had to adjust our plans to leave on Saturday instead of Sunday due to our school schedules,” said Jason Frazier, emphasizing the need for flexibility during this hectic period.
On the roads, AAA forecasts that at least 73 million drivers will hit the highways, an increase of 1.3 million compared to last year. Travelers like Gina Martino Trubites, who is driving to the nation’s capital, shared, “It’s a really nice drive. It only takes us about seven and a half to eight hours. This time of year, dealing with the airport chaos is just not worth it.”
Meanwhile, Tiffany Riefstahl, a self-proclaimed “passenger princess,” is traveling with her family to Massachusetts and Connecticut. She expressed her preference for hosting relatives rather than traveling, saying, “We moved away from family, so it makes sense for us to go where everyone else is.”
As the holiday rush intensifies, experts urge travelers to remain vigilant. Authorities recommend allowing extra travel time and staying informed about weather conditions.
In light of the increasing travel numbers and the lifting of FAA restrictions, the urgency for travelers to plan ahead is paramount. Whether flying or driving, this Thanksgiving promises to be a significant moment for family reunions and holiday celebrations, making awareness and preparation essential for all.
