Rev. Billy Graham Reflects on God’s Promises and Faith
In a recent correspondence, the late Rev. Billy Graham addressed a common theological question regarding the nature of humanity as children of God. Graham emphasized the importance of understanding biblical texts, particularly in relation to the concept of divine promises.
The Nature of Divine Kinship
In his response to a reader identified as C.G., Graham referenced the Bible, stating, “Those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God” (Romans 9:8, NKJV). This passage suggests that physical lineage does not determine one’s relationship with God. Instead, he highlighted another verse: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12, NKJV). This indicates that acceptance of Jesus is fundamental to becoming part of God’s family.
Graham stressed that the Bible serves as a book of promises that remains constant over time. He noted that God’s assurance never wavers, stating, “From one end of the Bible to the other, God assures us that He will never go back on His promises.” This emphasis on unwavering divine commitment is a cornerstone of Christian faith, particularly in times of difficulty.
The Call to Faith and Assurance
According to Graham, the act of becoming a child of God is a personal decision, empowered by a humble repentance of one’s sins and the acceptance of Jesus as Savior and Lord. He articulated that we are currently living in an age of grace, where God invites “whosoever will” to come to Him. This invitation opens the door to a relationship with God and the promises that accompany it.
While Graham acknowledged the profound comfort and strength derived from this relationship, he also cautioned that faith does not guarantee a life devoid of challenges. He reminded readers that God never promises a perfect life, but instead offers His presence and strength during life’s battles. “There is no greater strength, no greater assurance that He is with us,” Graham asserted, emphasizing the importance of standing firm on God’s promises.
This reflection, based on Graham’s extensive writings, serves as a reminder of the enduring nature of faith and the commitments made by God to His followers. As individuals navigate their spiritual journeys, the assurance of divine presence can provide essential support amidst life’s inevitable struggles.
