Social Security Offices Closing for 48 Hours: Key Update
URGENT UPDATE: The Social Security Administration (SSA) has just announced a critical update: its offices will be closed for a full 48 hours in observance of the federal holiday, Thanksgiving, falling on November 27 this year. The closures will take effect on Thursday, November 23, and Friday, November 24. This is a vital development for millions of Americans who rely on Social Security services.
During this two-day period, services such as applying for a new or replacement Social Security card, applying for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits, and making changes to benefit information will not be available in person. This impacts countless individuals who depend on these essential services, particularly those needing assistance with Medicare resources for prescription drug costs.
WHAT TO DO DURING CLOSURES: The SSA urges individuals to manage their benefits online during this time. Residents can create a personal my Social Security account to access various online services. These include applying for retirement, Medicare, and disability benefits, checking the status of applications, and printing verification letters—all from the comfort of their devices.
HOW TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT: Setting up a my Social Security account requires either an ID.me or Login.gov account. The SSA emphasizes that there is “no wrong choice” in selecting between these two options, both of which meet federal security standards.
To create an account, you’ll need a personal email address, a form of ID, your Social Security number, and a U.S. phone number. You must also be prepared to upload photos of your ID and use multi-factor authentication. Notably, individuals residing outside the U.S. or without a Social Security number will need to choose ID.me.
The SSA’s services are crucial for many, and the temporary closures may cause inconvenience. However, the online options provide a way to ensure that essential needs are met without delay.
As the closures approach, Americans are encouraged to take proactive measures to ensure they can access their benefits and services online. More information can be found directly on the SSA’s official website.
Stay tuned for further updates as the SSA will also close its offices again in December for Christmas. This ongoing situation underscores the importance of being informed about service availability during holiday periods.
