Stephen Cloobeck Exits California Governor Race, Backs Eric Swalwell
Democratic businessman Stephen Cloobeck announced on November 24, 2023, that he is withdrawing from the race for California governor. In a social media post, Cloobeck expressed his strong support for fellow Democrat Eric Swalwell, who recently launched his campaign for the governorship.
Cloobeck stated, “I only ran for Governor because I believed none of the other candidates were capable of doing the job.” He emphasized his interactions with various leaders, including Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, to illustrate his understanding of effective leadership. He believes that Swalwell possesses the integrity and commitment necessary to lead California effectively.
Swalwell officially entered the race on November 20, 2023, citing rising costs and public safety concerns as his primary motivations. In a statement, he declared, “I will be California’s fighter and protector. Our state is under attack,” referencing various national issues he feels have adversely impacted the state. Swalwell aims to address these challenges head-on, focusing on economic and social welfare for Californian families.
Cloobeck brings a wealth of experience to the political landscape, having spent over 40 years in the hospitality industry as the founder and former CEO of Diamond Resorts. Additionally, he has held significant roles such as chairman of the board for Brand USA Inc. and participated in judicial ethics and election practices committees. His diverse background highlights his commitment to public service and community engagement.
By endorsing Swalwell, Cloobeck hopes to unify the Democratic base in California as the gubernatorial race heats up. His exit from the race may streamline the Democratic primary, allowing Swalwell to focus on his campaign without significant competition from within the party.
As the election approaches, California voters will be watching closely to see how Swalwell’s campaign evolves and how Cloobeck’s endorsement might influence public opinion. The dynamics of the race will likely shift as more candidates respond to this change in the political landscape, setting the stage for a competitive election cycle in 2026.
