Nipsey Hussle Foundation Distributes 5,000 Turkeys in South LA
The Neighborhood Nip Foundation held its inaugural turkey drive on November 21, 2023, distributing approximately 5,000 turkeys to residents in South Los Angeles. This event marked the first major initiative from the foundation’s Slauson Avenue parking lot, the historic site of the late Nipsey Hussle‘s original Marathon Clothing store.
Samiel Asghedom, Hussle’s brother and a key figure in the foundation, emphasized the location’s significance. “This is where my brother first sold his mixtape. He ended up opening businesses in this parking lot and then buying the whole lot,” Asghedom stated. The parking lot has since been transformed into a community hub aimed at uplifting local youth and families.
The turkey drive was organized in partnership with the Think Watts Foundation, which shares a similar mission of community empowerment. Asghedom expressed the foundation’s commitment to supporting the community throughout the year, saying, “It’s an honor to be able to activate and do something here.”
Community members turned out in large numbers for the event, with residents like Charles Wright and his grandson appreciating the initiative. “We came to get turkeys and everything is wonderful,” Wright remarked, reflecting the positive atmosphere surrounding the giveaway.
The Neighborhood Nip Foundation’s renovated site is set to serve as a center for academic and musical studies, providing resources and opportunities for students ranging from elementary to high school. This initiative is part of a broader vision to create a nurturing environment for the youth of South Los Angeles.
Nipsey Hussle was tragically killed on March 31, 2019, outside his Marathon Clothing store in the Hyde Park neighborhood. He was just 33 years old and left behind two children. His legacy continues through the efforts of the Neighborhood Nip Foundation, which aims to enhance the lives of those in his community.
The foundation’s dedication to social impact highlights the ongoing commitment to Hussle’s vision of empowerment and upliftment for the South Los Angeles community.
