Joe Schoen’s Future with Giants Uncertain Amid Coaching Changes
The future of Joe Schoen with the New York Giants remains uncertain, despite retaining his position as general manager after the dismissal of head coach Brian Daboll. Recent reports suggest that Schoen’s continuation in the role is not guaranteed, with speculation about his future growing among insiders.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, while there have been discussions regarding Schoen’s job security, his contract extends until 2026. League sources indicate that he is likely to remain unless a new head coach expresses a strong desire to appoint a different general manager. Schoen is currently leading the search for a new head coach, which adds to the likelihood of his continued presence in the organization.
Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch have publicly stated that Schoen will spearhead the search for a new head coach, indicating their confidence in his leadership. However, Schoen’s track record has faced scrutiny due to several significant draft missteps during his tenure. Most notably, rookie pass-rusher Abdul Carter was recently benched for missing a walkthrough, raising questions about player management. Under Schoen’s oversight, the Giants have struggled, recording a dismal 11-34 since the start of the 2023 season.
Despite these challenges, the Giants’ job is reportedly viewed as a “highly coveted” opportunity by potential candidates. Raanan cites a source familiar with the situation who highlighted the franchise’s “young core” of talent, which includes promising players like rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, injured wide receiver Malik Nabers, left tackle Andrew Thomas, and rookie running back Cam Skattebo.
In a separate analysis, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic interviewed an unnamed senior executive who raised concerns about the Giants’ approach to their coaching situation. The executive noted that firing a coach without addressing broader organizational issues could signal a lack of introspection. They stated, “A head coaching change is a symptom that something is wrong in your organization. It’s rarely just the coach.”
As the Giants prepare for their upcoming game against the Detroit Lions on December 3, 2023, they enter as 10-point underdogs, according to ESPN BET. Should the performance on the field worsen, discussions regarding Schoen’s future are likely to intensify, despite the current support from ownership and league insiders. The outcome of this game may further define the trajectory of the Giants’ organizational structure as they navigate a challenging season.
