Urgent: Rabbi Condemns Anti-Jewish Rhetoric in Recent Opinion Article
UPDATE: Rabbi Fred Greene of Boulder has issued a strong condemnation of recent anti-Jewish rhetoric in Guy Benintendi’s opinion piece titled “We must resist Zionist propaganda.” The Rabbi’s response, published earlier today, emphasizes the urgent need to address dangerous misconceptions that promote antisemitic tropes and undermine Jewish rights.
Rabbi Greene asserts that while it is entirely legitimate to critique Israeli policies, Benintendi’s assertions cross a critical line by denying the fundamental rights of Jewish people. He argues that at its core, Zionism embodies the belief in Jewish self-determination in their ancestral homeland, a right that should be recognized for all peoples.
In his response, Rabbi Greene identifies himself as a Zionist who opposes settlement expansion and supports Palestinian rights and dignity. He insists that these beliefs are not mutually exclusive. “Calling Jewish self-determination ‘indefensible’ does not simply critique policies—it denies the very essence of Jewish identity,” he states.
The Rabbi highlights a concerning aspect of Benintendi’s article: the suggestion that Americans are unwittingly influenced by a “Zionist narrative.” Rabbi Greene warns that this narrative employs a classic antisemitic trope, implying that Jews manipulate discourse and politics in hidden ways. “Such rhetoric echoes conspiracy theories about Jewish power that have fueled violence against us for centuries,” he adds.
The Rabbi emphasizes the complexity of American foreign policy, which is shaped by a multitude of geopolitical factors rather than a singular narrative. His call for constructive criticism of state actions remains firm. “Critique is essential, but it must not erase Jewish history, trauma, and rights to safety,” he insists.
Rabbi Greene urges readers to recognize the shared suffering of both Jewish and Palestinian communities. “We can pursue justice while acknowledging that two indigenous peoples inhabit this land and must work together to forge a better future,” he states passionately.
He warns that Benintendi’s article risks perpetuating anti-Jewish sentiment under the guise of political critique, which could stymie efforts for genuine peace. “This kind of rhetoric breeds hostility and inhibits real, lasting solutions,” Rabbi Greene concludes.
As this debate continues to unfold, observers are encouraged to engage critically with the discourse surrounding Zionism and its implications for both Jewish and Palestinian communities. The urgency of this conversation is heightened by rising antisemitism and the need for a respectful dialogue that honors the rights and histories of all peoples involved.
