Community Rallies to Support Families in Need This Holiday Season
As the holiday season approaches, The Garden Island is highlighting the stories of families and individuals in need within the Kauai community. Through Christmas Eve, the publication is sharing daily narratives of those facing significant challenges and seeking assistance. This initiative is part of the Christmas Fund, which allows community members to contribute to a cause that directly supports local families.
The Christmas Fund, organized by the Zonta Club of Kauai, uses donations to purchase gift certificates that are distributed to families through social service agencies. Each story offers insight into the struggles and resilience of those affected, emphasizing the importance of community support during this time of year.
Stories of Resilience and Need
Daisy and Duke are a couple who overcame homelessness earlier this year, transitioning from living in their truck to securing a stable home. Their journey has been marked by hard work, with both finding employment. Despite their limited income primarily going toward rent and bills, they have cultivated skills in gardening, allowing them to provide fresh produce for their meals. They also share their bounty with others in need, showcasing their generous spirit.
Another family, Gina and George, experienced two years of homelessness before securing housing in 2024. Now, they are focused on managing their limited income, which covers essential expenses. They are in need of food and baby supplies to support their young family.
Tabitha, who also secured housing this year, continues to face challenges as she works to improve her quality of life. Essential items such as food and toiletries would greatly assist her ongoing efforts to care for her family.
Iris, accompanied by her daughters Ivy and Irene, arrived at stable housing a few months ago after enduring a year and a half of homelessness. Iris’s organizational skills have proven invaluable as she navigates the process of applying for services. With a limited income, she is in need of food and gas to support her family’s daily requirements.
Ursula, another individual who found housing in late 2024, faced nearly two years of couch surfing before securing a permanent residence. Her vibrant personality and willingness to help others are evident in her interactions. Ursula’s limited income covers her rent and bills, but she would appreciate any assistance with food.
Janet, who has called the beach home for two years, is now settled in housing as of late 2024. She enjoys crafting items from materials found on the shore, showcasing the beauty of Kauai. Janet’s income goes primarily to rent, and she would welcome food and craft supplies to support her creative endeavors.
Keith’s story is one of resilience as he transitioned to stable housing in mid-2025 after living out of his car. His personal battles have instilled strength and positivity in him. With limited income dedicated to rent and bills, he seeks assistance with food and gas.
Mary, a lifelong resident of Kauai, faced four years of homelessness before securing housing in late 2024. Known for her upfront and honest conversations, she is deeply involved in community activities, including making poi. Mary’s limited income covers her rent, but she would greatly appreciate food support.
Lastly, Hal and his daughter Haley overcame five years of homelessness, with Hal now working full-time to provide for his family. Their story exemplifies determination, as they work together to meet their basic needs. With limited income going toward rent and bills, they are in need of food and gas.
