DWTS Season 34 Finale Introduces Major Competition Format Change

The finale of Season 34 of Dancing with the Stars will feature a significant change in its competition format, promising a thrilling conclusion to the season. Set to air on November 25, 2023, the finale will introduce a three-round competition format, a first for the series, as announced by co-host Alfonso Ribeiro during the November 18 episode.

The new structure includes three distinct rounds: the Instant Dances, where contestants must perform to a surprise song live; the Make-or-Break Freestyle, which allows for creative freedom and significantly influences public voting; and the Judges’ Choice round, where judges select specific routines or dance styles for the couples to perform. This shift aims to elevate the excitement and challenge for participants as they vie for the top spot.

Julianne Hough, also a co-host for this season, expressed her enthusiasm about the heightened competition, stating, “With all the incredible talent this season, you don’t want to miss it.” The semifinals have already showcased remarkable performances, with multiple couples achieving perfect scores.

In the semifinals, Robert Irwin and Witney Carson impressed judges with their jive to “Baby I’m a Star,” earning high praise from judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who remarked, “That is how you tell everyone that you demand to be in the finale.” Similarly, Alix Earle and Val Chmerkovskiy scored a perfect 30 for their Viennese waltz to “Purple Rain,” with judge Derek Hough noting Earle’s transformation into a talented dancer.

Another standout performance came from Elaine Hendrix and Alan Bersten, who captivated audiences with their routine to “When Doves Cry.” Judge Bruno Tonioli described the performance as “a regal performance… Majestic,” highlighting the quality of talent this season.
