Man Killed by Train in Oakland’s Second Fatal Collision in 24 Hours
UPDATE: A man tragically lost his life early Wednesday morning after being struck by a freight train in East Oakland, marking the second fatal train incident in less than 24 hours. The collision occurred at approximately 2:54 AM near the intersection of 60th Avenue and San Leandro Street, according to local authorities.
Reports indicate that the unidentified victim was sitting on the railroad tracks when he was hit by an eastbound Union Pacific freight train. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the train crew or passengers. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to determine why the man was on the tracks at that time.
This incident follows another tragic event just hours earlier. Around 9:40 AM on Tuesday, a man was fatally struck by an Amtrak train near 37th Avenue and East 9th Street. Initial findings suggest he may have been fleeing from a dispute when he was struck. Like the earlier case, this death remains under investigation.
Authorities have confirmed that, despite the proximity of the two incidents, they are not related. Both cases have raised serious questions about safety and awareness in the area, prompting increased attention from local officials.
As investigations continue, community leaders are urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid unsafe behaviors around train tracks. The Oakland area has seen rising concerns regarding pedestrian safety, particularly in light of these recent tragedies.
