Sunnyvale Man Arrested for Assault During Protest on Highway 101
BREAKING: A Sunnyvale man has been arrested for assaulting demonstrators during a protest on the Highway 101 overpass, just before 5:30 p.m. on November 7, 2023. The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Joshua Krupia, is facing serious charges after cutting down flags and engaging in a violent confrontation with participants advocating for Palestinian rights.
According to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, Krupia approached a peaceful vigil organized by pro-Palestinian volunteers and initiated a verbal dispute. Eyewitnesses reported that he shouted racist slurs before using a pocketknife to cut down flags and banners. The situation escalated quickly, leading to physical violence. Witnesses claim Krupia struck one individual in the head with a flashlight, causing minor injuries, and punched another in the altercation.
The protest, described as a demonstration for Gaza and justice for Palestinians, was organized by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, San Francisco Bay Area (CAIR-SFBA). In a statement, CAIR-SFBA Director Zahra Billoo expressed outrage, stating, “This was not just vandalism—it was a hate-motivated attack that left people injured while exercising their right to free expression.”
Authorities confirmed that Krupia was detained by bystanders until police arrived. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and booked into Santa Clara County Jail. The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing for additional witnesses to come forward.
This incident highlights the rising tensions surrounding protests related to the Palestinian cause, as communities continue to advocate for human rights amid escalating conflicts. The emotional impact on those involved is significant, with many expressing fear and anger over the violent interruption of their peaceful demonstration.
As this story develops, residents and activists are urged to remain vigilant and report any further incidents of hate or violence. Stay tuned for updates as officials continue to investigate this alarming event in Sunnyvale.
