Thanksgiving Turkey Buying Guide: What You Need to Know NOW
URGENT UPDATE: As Thanksgiving approaches, many are asking if it’s too soon to buy your turkey. With the holiday just weeks away, food safety experts are weighing in on the best time to purchase and prepare your bird.
This year, Thanksgiving falls on November 23, 2023, making it critical for those hosting to plan ahead. If you’re cooking the turkey, knowing when to buy and thaw it is essential for a safe and delicious meal.
Officials from the Minnesota Department of Health advise that if you’re purchasing a fresh turkey, you should wait until just one or two days before Thanksgiving to buy it. Keep the turkey in the refrigerator on a tray to catch any juices and maintain food safety.
For those opting for a frozen turkey, the advice is more flexible. According to health experts, a frozen turkey can be stored in the freezer “indefinitely,” but it’s best to cook it within a year. This means savvy planners can even buy a turkey after Thanksgiving and store it for next year!
When it’s time to thaw your turkey, it’s crucial to do so safely. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service warns against thawing your bird on the counter for extended periods. Leaving a turkey out for more than 2 hours can push it into the “Danger Zone” temperature range between 40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit, where bacteria thrive.
“A package of frozen meat or poultry left thawing on the counter more than 2 hours is not at a safe temperature,” says the FSIS.
Instead, the FSIS recommends three safe thawing methods: in the refrigerator, in cold water, or using a microwave. The size of your turkey will dictate how long it needs to thaw, so plan accordingly!
If you forget to thaw your turkey, don’t panic! The FSIS states that frozen turkeys can still be cooked, although they will take at least 50% longer than thawed ones. This last-minute option can save the day for unprepared hosts.
As you prepare for the holiday, consider grocery store options too. Retailers like Walmart are offering Thanksgiving meal packages designed to feed 10 people for under $40, providing a budget-friendly alternative for those who want to simplify their holiday preparations.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, stay informed and ready. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a first-time host, knowing when to buy and how to handle your turkey will ensure a safe and joyous celebration.
In the spirit of community, share this information with friends and family to help them prepare for a safe and delicious Thanksgiving feast!
