Lynne Ramsay’s latest film, Die My Love, starring Jennifer Lawrence, delves into the complexities of motherhood through a dark and surreal lens. In Die My Love, Lawrence plays Grace, a woman who relocates with her husband, Jackson, portrayed by Robert Pattinson, to a rural area in the United States. Their idyllic life soon shifts after the arrival of their child, leading to a tumultuous exploration of motherhood. The film examines Grace’s internal battles, showcasing her struggles with isolation, writer’s block, and a changing relationship with her husband.

Ramsay emphasizes that the film should not be viewed solely through the lens of postpartum depression, despite critics suggesting this interpretation after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Instead, she aims to present a more nuanced portrayal of motherhood, reflecting the myriad challenges women face.

“In Grace, I see a character who is trying to feel something,” Ramsay explains. “She is breaking through the constraints of expectation and confronting the harsh realities of motherhood. There’s a truth in her rawness that resonates.”

Throughout the film, Lawrence’s performance is unflinching, allowing audiences to witness the character’s descent into chaos as she grapples with her new life. Critics have praised her commitment, suggesting she may receive an Oscar nomination for her role.
