Cal Falls to Virginia Tech 42-34 in Double Overtime Thriller
UPDATE: Cal’s hopes for early bowl eligibility took a devastating blow with a 42-34 double-overtime loss to Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium on October 27, 2023. The Bears had a chance to secure their sixth win of the season but faltered in a dramatic finish that will leave fans reeling.
The game unfolded with intense back-and-forth action in overtime. Cal struck first with a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele to tight end Mason Mini. However, Virginia Tech’s Kyron Drones quickly responded with a 17-yard touchdown run, leveling the score at 34-34. In the second overtime, Drones threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Takye Heath and then converted a two-point conversion, giving the Hokies a decisive 42-34 lead.
The loss leaves Cal with a record of 5-3 and 2-2 ACC, dashing their hopes of clinching bowl eligibility earlier than any year since 2006. They now face a grueling schedule with four challenging games to close out the season, starting with a matchup against No. 16 Virginia next Saturday at home.
In a game marked by defensive struggles, Virginia Tech’s rushing attack overwhelmed Cal, racking up 357 rushing yards compared to the Bears’ meager 39 yards. Drones was a standout, rushing for 137 yards and contributing two touchdowns along with three touchdown passes. Sagapolutele finished with 285 passing yards, connecting on 24 of 39 attempts with one touchdown and no turnovers, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Hokies’ explosive offense.
The game started ominously for Cal, falling behind 10-0 early on. However, the Bears roared back to take a 20-10 lead at halftime, thanks to a strong performance from running back Kendrick Raphael, who scored three touchdowns. Yet, Virginia Tech regrouped and scored 17 unanswered points to regain control.
As the clock dwindled, Cal’s defense made pivotal stops, including a crucial interception by Cam Sidney in the end zone that kept the game tied. But Virginia Tech’s offense continued to apply pressure, ultimately leading to a dramatic overtime showdown where the Bears could not find the end zone on their final possession.
The emotional rollercoaster of this game will linger for Cal fans, who were hopeful for a special season. As they prepare for their upcoming matches, the Bears must regroup and refocus if they aim to achieve bowl eligibility this year.
This thrilling matchup serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of college football and the fierce competition within the ACC. With the season rapidly approaching its conclusion, all eyes will be on how Cal responds to this heart-wrenching defeat.
