Tyler Seguin of the Dallas Stars is expected to miss the remainder of the NHL season following a significant injury—a torn ACL in his right knee. This injury occurred during a game against the New York Rangers on March 12, 2024, when Seguin collided with Rangers defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov. Coach Glen Gulutzan confirmed the severity of the injury on March 13, indicating it would keep Seguin sidelined for an extended period.

Seguin, who is 33 years old, sustained the injury in the first period of the match at Madison Square Garden. Following the incident, he was unable to skate and required assistance from teammates and an athletic trainer to leave the ice and reach the locker room.

Impact of Seguin’s Injury on the Stars

Gulutzan expressed disappointment over the news, stating, “It’s a tough day for us today with the news. Other guys now have to step in and play.” The coach acknowledged the mounting injuries affecting the team as they navigate through a challenging season. Despite the setback, he emphasized the need for the team to persevere, noting that “lots of guys that their opportunity is born from some of this misfortune.”

Seguin’s injury marks another difficult chapter for the forward, who missed most of the previous season due to hip surgery. He made a late comeback for the final game and contributed to the Stars’ playoff run to the Western Conference final. Gulutzan reflected on Seguin’s determination to return, highlighting his leadership within the team: “He’s a great leader for us, and he’s a great pro.”

Looking ahead, Nathan Bastian is expected to fill Seguin’s role in the lineup during the Stars’ subsequent match against the New Jersey Devils. The team also anticipates the return of center Matt Duchene, who could provide additional support if his recovery progresses as hoped. Gulutzan stated that Duchene’s return could happen “sooner than later,” which would help alleviate some of the pressure on the lineup.

Next Steps for the Dallas Stars

With Seguin out, Gulutzan emphasized the importance of other players stepping up to fill the void. He pointed out that opportunities arise from adversity and that the team must adapt to the situation. “You’re going to see who grabs it,” he said, indicating that players like Mavrik Bourque will also receive more chances to showcase their skills in Seguin’s absence.

The Dallas Stars will need to rally together as they face the remaining challenges of the season without one of their key players. With the NHL season progressing, the team aims to maintain its competitive edge while navigating injuries and ensuring that they continue to push forward.
