Cara Buono Discusses Karen Wheeler’s Standout Moments in ‘Stranger Things’
The upcoming episodes of Stranger Things will showcase a significant evolution in the character of Karen Wheeler, played by Cara Buono. As the series progresses, particularly in the first part of season five, viewers will see Karen transition from a background figure into a more prominent role in the ongoing battle against the supernatural forces plaguing Hawkins.
In a pivotal scene, Karen confronts one of Vecna‘s minions that threatens her youngest daughter. This moment not only highlights her protective instincts but also takes place in the family’s iconic basement, where the core group of kids first bonded over Dungeons & Dragons. Buono described this moment as a turning point for Karen, who has largely been depicted as a supportive yet often oblivious mother throughout the series.
Revealing a New Side of Karen
During an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Buono elaborated on the character’s journey. “In season five, suddenly Karen’s thrust into the unbelievable,” she said. “This whole time, she’s been in denial and drinking her wine.” Buono explained that her portrayal of Karen as a quintessential ’80s mom involved a creative interpretation of her drinking habits. Her choice of beverage? White wine, which she humorously notes is less likely to stain her living room’s white rug.
Buono emphasized the complexity of Karen’s character, referring to her as a “high-functioning closet alcoholic.” This depiction serves to justify her previous obliviousness and denial regarding the dangers surrounding her family. “It was my way to try to justify the immense denial and cluelessness that she embodied,” Buono added.
Life Under Quarantine in Hawkins
As season five unfolds, Hawkins faces military lockdown, impacting the characters’ daily lives and supply access. Buono revealed that Karen finds ways to navigate this challenging environment. “Karen knows where to get the wine,” she noted, suggesting that her character engages with a thriving black market to procure supplies. “She’s focused on the wine, maybe some nail polish,” Buono explained, indicating Karen’s determination to maintain a sense of normalcy amid chaos.
Moreover, the challenges of quarantine affect not only the characters’ access to resources but also their appearance. Buono commented on Karen’s hair, which has “seen better days” due to the lack of access to quality hair products during the quarantine. “It gets a little sad looking in season five,” she admitted, highlighting the character’s struggle to maintain her usual self in a difficult situation.
As anticipation builds for the return of Stranger Things on December 25 and December 31, viewers can look forward to seeing a more dynamic and resilient side of Karen Wheeler. Buono’s insights into her character’s development promise to add depth to the ongoing narrative, making fans eager for the next chapters in Hawkins’ battle against the Upside Down.
