Supercar Sells for Record $20.6 Million at Las Vegas Auction
In a significant event for the luxury automotive sector, the S1 LM supercar (Chassis #1) was sold for a staggering $20,630,000 at auction in Las Vegas on November 21, 2023. This sale, conducted by Gordon Murray Special Vehicles (GMSV), marks a new record for the most expensive new car ever sold at auction, excluding charitable sales. The auction took place during the amfAR charity’s Gala Dinner, held in conjunction with the Las Vegas Formula One Grand Prix.
Record-Breaking Auction Event
The atmosphere at the event was electric, highlighted by the dramatic arrival of the S1 LM, which was flown into the venue suspended beneath a helicopter. This theatrical entrance set the stage for the evening’s excitement at the Wynn Las Vegas. Fierce bidding ensued among collectors present at the gala and remote bidders from around the world, ultimately achieving a record hammer price that underscores the car’s exceptional value.
The winning bidder now embarks on a unique customer journey, which includes ownership of this rare supercar, described as “timelessly beautiful.” Accompanying the purchase is a distinctive 500-page monograph that chronicles the S1 LM’s creation, featuring original sketches and notes from Gordon Murray‘s design notebook.
Gordon Murray’s Vision
Professor Gordon Murray, CBE, expressed his thoughts on the record-setting auction, stating, “This world record auction result is a defining moment for our entire team and for the automotive world. The S1 LM represents everything I have learned in six decades of design – a pure expression of driving perfection, engineering art, and a true return to beauty.”
Named in homage to Murray’s legendary McLaren F1 LM, the S1 LM is the inaugural creation from GMSV, with only five units set to be produced. Each vehicle exemplifies lightweight engineering and timeless design. The S1 LM embodies Murray’s seven principles: Driving Perfection, Lightweight, Engineering Art, A Return to Beauty, Exclusivity, and The Customer Journey.
The S1 LM was first unveiled during Monterey Car Week in August 2025, when it was revealed that all five supercars were purchased by a single individual. While the Las Vegas auction gained significant attention, details surrounding the ownership of the remaining four chassis remain undisclosed.
This groundbreaking sale not only highlights the luxury automotive market’s vibrancy but also cements the S1 LM’s status as a coveted collector’s item, poised to resonate within the realms of art and engineering for years to come.
