New Jersey Officials Launch Urgent Trade Mission to Mexico

UPDATE: New Jersey officials have just returned from a critical three-day trade mission to Mexico aimed at strengthening economic ties. Governor Phil Murphy, along with representatives from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey and Choose New Jersey, focused on enhancing partnerships in business, education, and culture.

The mission, which took place from October 16-18, 2023, is particularly significant given that over 2 million Latinos reside in New Jersey, as reported in the 2020 U.S. Census. This demographic plays a crucial role in the state’s economy and cultural landscape.

During the mission, officials sought to explore new avenues for collaboration with Mexican businesses, aiming to boost trade and investment opportunities. The trip underscores a growing recognition of the importance of international connections for local economies.

“This mission is about forging deeper connections that benefit both New Jersey and Mexico,” said Governor Murphy during a press briefing in New Brunswick prior to departure.

Joining the discussion on the mission are Carlos Medina from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Mariana Diaz Nagore, the head consul from the consulate of Mexico in New Brunswick. Their insights reflect the shared goals of expanding economic opportunities and building educational partnerships.

In addition to the trade mission, the program will feature a special segment with La Doctora Elaine Ruiz Lopez, a Latina educator from the South Bronx. Ruiz Lopez founded a charter school and authored a critically acclaimed book discussing her journey and the challenges she faced in establishing this educational institution.

Her story highlights the resilience and contributions of the Latino community, further emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange in the mission’s objectives.
