Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder and the Holiday Blues
As the winter holiday season approaches, many individuals experience feelings of sadness or low energy, commonly referred to as the “holiday blues.” However, these feelings may indicate a more serious condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Dr. Lillia Cherkasskiy, a Family Medicine Provider at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska, emphasizes the importance of recognizing the difference between the holiday blues and SAD.
Understanding these distinctions is crucial for those who find themselves struggling during this time of year. The holiday blues typically manifest as a temporary feeling of sadness or a lack of joy in activities, lasting only a few days and generally not interfering with daily life. In contrast, Seasonal Affective Disorder is characterized by more severe symptoms, including episodes of major depression that align with seasonal changes. These symptoms can persist for multiple days, severely affecting an individual’s daily functioning and relationships.
For individuals experiencing these symptoms, Dr. Cherkasskiy advises seeking professional help, particularly when concerns arise from friends or family members. It is essential to reach out to a primary care doctor for an evaluation and appropriate support. In instances where thoughts of self-harm occur, immediate attention should be sought at the nearest emergency room.
To combat seasonal depression, Dr. Cherkasskiy recommends several proactive measures. Prioritizing healthy sleep habits is essential, as is engaging in regular exercise. She suggests incorporating daily walks outside to benefit from natural light exposure, which can significantly enhance mood and well-being.
Recognizing the impact of seasonal changes on mental health is vital for individuals and their loved ones. By understanding the symptoms and differences between the holiday blues and Seasonal Affective Disorder, individuals can take informed steps towards improving their mental health during this challenging time of year.
