Bellevue Launches ‘Diversity Advantage Plan 2035’ for Equity
The Bellevue City Council has unveiled the ambitious Diversity Advantage Plan 2035, a new initiative aimed at enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the city. This comprehensive strategy, presented during a council meeting on November 20, 2023, outlines a series of long-term objectives designed to ensure equitable access to city services and foster positive impacts across all communities.
The plan encompasses 41 long-term equity objectives that have been developed with input from both community members and city staff. These goals align with the council’s strategic target areas, reflecting a commitment to creating a more equitable community. “The city identifies a vision for and commitment to a more equitable community,” the plan asserts, with further actions related to the initiative anticipated in upcoming council meetings.
Revised Sign Code to Enhance Business Visibility
In addition to the diversity plan, the council addressed amendments to the city’s sign code. Following feedback from the community, the revised code aims to modernize sign design, simplify regulations, and adhere to important judicial rulings. Discussions during the council meeting indicated a focus on time-based standards for temporary signs, particularly in residential areas.
The significance of signage for local businesses was underscored, with many citing its crucial role in visibility and economic sustainability. Bellevue city staff will enter a phase of reviewing and drafting this updated sign code, which will include broader public outreach and community engagement. The finalized draft is expected to be presented for council consideration in 2026, demonstrating the city’s ongoing commitment to addressing community needs.
Small Business Saturday Celebrated
With Small Business Saturday approaching on November 29, the council took the opportunity to honor local businesses during the meeting. This date has been officially proclaimed as Small Business Saturday, promoting the community’s support for the small enterprises that constitute 97% of Bellevue’s business landscape.
The owner of Monserrate Colombian Cuisine accepted the proclamation on behalf of the small business community, highlighting the vital contributions that these establishments make to the local economy. The council’s emphasis on supporting small businesses underscores the interconnectedness of community and economic vitality in Bellevue.
These initiatives reflect Bellevue’s proactive approach to fostering inclusivity and supporting local businesses, paving the way for a more equitable and vibrant city by 2035.
