Three Businesses in Grand Forks Fail Alcohol Compliance Checks
Grand Forks authorities conducted alcohol compliance checks on October 22, 2023, revealing that three out of twelve local businesses did not adhere to regulations designed to prevent underage alcohol sales. The checks, executed by the Grand Forks Police Department in collaboration with area youths, aimed to ensure responsible service of alcoholic beverages.
Nine establishments successfully passed the compliance checks, receiving commendations from the police department for their efforts to prevent access to alcohol by minors. Among those recognized were Paradiso Mexican Restaurant, The Office Pub & Grub, Red Ray Lanes, Hugo’s on 32nd Avenue, Eagles Crest Grill, Harry’s Steakhouse, Cookie’s Lounge, The Hub Pub, and The Loft.
The Grand Forks Police Department issued a press release the following day, thanking these businesses for their commitment to responsible alcohol service. “Thank you to these businesses for your hard work on keeping underage people from getting access to alcoholic beverages,” the statement noted.
Conversely, the establishments that failed the compliance checks included The Ramada, Fuji Japanese Seafood and Steakhouse, and a downtown location of Hugo’s. The police department conducts these checks multiple times throughout the year, employing a straightforward method. A youth, under the supervision of an officer, attempts to purchase alcohol while openly providing their actual identification and stating their age when asked.
If an establishment denies the sale, it is considered compliant. If a sale occurs, the police officer present takes necessary enforcement action. The ongoing checks are part of the department’s broader initiative to deter underage drinking and enhance community safety.
The compliance checks serve not only as a means of enforcement but also as an educational opportunity for local businesses. By fostering a culture of responsibility, the Grand Forks community aims to reduce the risks associated with underage drinking and ensure a safer environment for its youth.
