Thailand’s Queen Mother Sirikit passed away on October 17, 2023, at the age of 93, according to the Thai Royal Household Bureau. A significant figure in modern Thai history, she had been hospitalized since 2019 due to various health issues and had not appeared in public since suffering a stroke in 2012. Following her death, a mourning period of one year has been declared for the royal family, with public offices instructed to fly flags at half-mast for a month.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul cancelled his trip to the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur as a mark of respect. He is expected to return to Thailand shortly after signing a ceasefire agreement with Cambodia.

Legacy of Elegance and Philanthropy

Born in 1932, Sirikit Kitiyakara was the daughter of Thailand’s ambassador to France. She grew up in an environment of privilege and luxury, which shaped her future role as a style icon. Sirikit became Queen Consort when she married King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1950, who reigned for 70 years and became Thailand’s longest-serving monarch.

Sirikit’s charisma and elegance captured the hearts of both Thais and international audiences. Her appearance at a state dinner in the United States in 1960 drew widespread acclaim, with Time magazine describing her as “svelte” and “archfeminist.” Her collaboration with French designer Pierre Balmain helped popularize Thai silk, supporting local artisans and revitalizing the country’s silk industry.

For over four decades, she championed rural development alongside the king, often visiting remote villages to promote projects aimed at alleviating poverty. Her birthday, celebrated on August 12, was designated as Mother’s Day and became a national holiday in Thailand.

Political Influence and Public Mourning

While the Thai monarchy traditionally maintains a position above politics, Queen Mother Sirikit occasionally intervened in political matters. In 1998, she used her birthday address to rally support for then-Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai, significantly impacting political dynamics at the time. Additionally, she was associated with the royalist People’s Alliance for Democracy, supporting movements that challenged governments aligned with former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The royal family has requested the private sector to adjust festive events in light of the mourning period. Events planned by the popular K-pop group Blackpink will proceed, but attendees are asked to wear black and white in tribute.

Mourners gathered outside Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok, where Sirikit passed away. Among them was 67-year-old Maneenat Laowalert, who expressed deep sorrow, stating, “When I learned the news, my world stopped and I had flashes from the past of all the things that Her Majesty has done for us.”

Queen Mother Sirikit is survived by her son, the current king, Maha Vajiralongkorn, and three daughters. Her contributions to Thai society, both in fashion and philanthropy, have left an indelible mark on the nation, and her passing will be felt deeply across the country.
