Poll Reveals 9% of NYC Residents May Leave if Mamdani Wins

A recent poll conducted by J.L. Partners for the Daily Mail indicates that nearly 9% of New York City residents plan to leave the city if Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist candidate, wins the mayoral race. This figure translates to approximately 765,000 individuals, a significant number within a population of around 8.5 million.
The poll reveals that an additional 2.12 million residents are considering leaving, which would account for about 25% of the city’s population. Mamdani’s platform includes proposals aimed at improving affordability, such as free childcare, a rent freeze, and free public transportation.
As the mayoral election approaches on November 7, 2023, Mamdani appears to be leading in support against his opponents, including Republican Curtis Sliwa and former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent. Early voting saw hundreds of thousands participating, reflecting growing momentum for Mamdani’s campaign.
Political Endorsements and Opposition
Mamdani’s campaign has garnered attention from prominent figures, including endorsements from Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and a recent rally featuring Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders. In a private conversation, former President Barack Obama commended Mamdani’s campaign, stating, “Your campaign has been impressive to watch,” although he did not formally endorse him.
In contrast, former President Donald Trump has voiced strong opposition to Mamdani. In an interview with “60 Minutes,” Trump characterized Mamdani as “far worse than a socialist” and suggested that his administration might consider withholding federal funding to New York City if Mamdani is elected. “It’s going to be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York,” Trump remarked, expressing concern over the implications of a “communist” leading the city.
The election results on November 7 will not only determine the future leadership of New York City but may also significantly impact its demographic landscape, as many residents weigh their options amidst this contentious mayoral race. With political tensions rising, the outcome could shape the city’s policies and financial support in the coming years.
