Mexican Cartel Leader Captured in Joint Operation with U.S. Support
Mexican authorities apprehended a leading figure of the Sinaloa Cartel, identified as Leonardo Daniel Martinez Vera, known by the alias “El Pato,” on October 15, 2023. The arrest took place in Juarez, Mexico, with significant assistance from the United States National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC).
The Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, confirmed the operation, emphasizing the collaborative efforts to combat cartel activities targeting American citizens. “We will not allow cartel gangs who target Americans to roam freely, whether in the U.S. or across the border in Mexico,” Gabbard stated in a press release. The Sinaloa Cartel, notorious for its involvement in drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, and murder, was designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by former President Donald J. Trump shortly after he took office.
The NCTC played a crucial role in this operation by providing actionable intelligence that led to Martinez Vera’s location. His arrest occurred as he attempted to escape from a hideout, alongside three associates involved in money laundering activities for the cartel.
Joint Efforts Against Cartel Violence
Martinez Vera’s capture is a culmination of a nine-month interagency collaboration involving the NCTC, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Joint Task Force-North, and the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service. Gabbard highlighted the importance of these coordinated efforts, stating, “For more than two decades, NCTC has led the Intelligence Community in synchronizing information that can be turned into actionable intelligence.”
The operation is part of a broader strategy initiated under Trump’s administration to designate international cartels as terrorist organizations. Gabbard noted that this strategy aims to “disrupt their networks” and enhance cooperation with Mexican authorities to improve community safety and protect American lives.
The capture of Martinez Vera marks a significant step in the fight against organized crime in North America. The U.S. government continues to prioritize resources to combat cartel influence and enhance security measures both domestically and internationally.
As law enforcement agencies work to dismantle cartel operations, the ongoing collaboration between U.S. and Mexican authorities is seen as vital in addressing the complex challenges posed by organized crime.
