Man Takes Ontario Bus on Joyride, Turns Away Passenger with Expired Pass
A man in Ontario took an unusual joyride on a transit bus while approximately ten passengers remained onboard, prompting a response from local police. The incident occurred on the evening of March 12, 2024, when the bus driver stepped out for a break at a terminal. Upon the driver’s exit, the man boarded the bus and drove off, managing to make stops along the route for passengers to get on and off.
According to a press release from the Hamilton Police, the passengers initially did not realize that the driver was not a legitimate bus operator. As the situation unfolded, the man began to take incorrect turns, leading passengers to assist him with directions. This unexpected turn of events raised concerns about public safety.
Police Response and Resolution
Hamilton Police monitored the bus’s movements while coordinating with the Hamilton Street Railway to track the vehicle’s GPS location. They approached the situation cautiously, choosing to keep their sirens off to avoid alarming the driver. Police spokesperson Trevor McKenna emphasized the importance of handling the situation delicately, stating, “We didn’t want to spook him. We didn’t want to make this a tragedy.”
After approximately 15 minutes, law enforcement successfully brought the bus to a stop without incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the passengers or the suspect. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, faces multiple charges, including theft and possession of over $5,000, obstructing police, and driving while prohibited.
Public Safety Concerns
McKenna remarked on the unusual nature of the event, noting, “It’s comical but at the same time it’s serious. We’re thankful nobody was hurt.” The incident raises questions about public safety measures and the protocols in place for transit systems.
The suspect is expected to appear in court to respond to the charges against him. Hamilton Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to ensure that similar occurrences do not happen in the future.
