False Quote Attributed to Released Israeli Prisoner Debunked
Alexander Troufanov, an Israeli man released from captivity by Hamas, did not make a statement praising his captors, despite a viral quote circulating online. The misinformation emerged shortly after his release on February 15, 2025, and resurfaced months later, prompting the need for clarification.
The erroneous quote claimed that Troufanov expressed gratitude towards his captors, stating, “Your kindness has been engraved in my conscience forever.” This false attribution was originally posted on the social media platform X by influencer Khaled Safi. In a follow-up clarification, Safi admitted that he had created the quote “on his behalf,” rather than it being a direct statement from Troufanov.
On February 16, 2025, the quote appeared in a Facebook post by the page titled “Towards Understanding Islam.” The post sensationalized the narrative around Troufanov’s release and included a photograph of the hostage exchange ceremony in Khan Younis, Gaza Strip.
In the image, Troufanov, along with other released hostages, is seen being escorted by Hamas fighters as they were handed over to the Red Cross. The accompanying caption from the Associated Press identified Troufanov, aged 29, alongside fellow hostages Iair Horn, 46, and Sagui Dekel Chen, 36.
Safi’s post on X, which included an eight-second video clip of Troufanov, also contained a translated version of the fabricated quote. The translation echoed the same sentiment as the Facebook post, attributing themes of respect and gratitude to Troufanov without his direct endorsement.
Following the dissemination of the false quote, several users sought clarification from Safi. On February 15, 2025, he responded, stating, “These are not the words of the captive, but rather I wrote them on his behalf, describing his condition, his gratitude, his thanks, and his bowing to the men of the resistance.”
The spread of the false quote reflects the challenges surrounding information verification in a highly polarized environment. As misinformation continues to circulate, it underscores the importance of careful scrutiny of claims made on social media platforms.
While Troufanov’s release was a significant event, the context surrounding it should not be overshadowed by fabricated narratives. Correcting such misinformation is crucial for both public understanding and the integrity of dialogue surrounding complex geopolitical issues.
