URGENT UPDATE: Washington Township is transforming the historic Thorington Schoolhouse into a vibrant community hub at the new Thorington Park. Supervisor Sam Previti has confirmed that the nearly two-century-old landmark has been successfully relocated to a five-acre site, marking a significant revival from its previous state of neglect.

The move, completed earlier today, involved careful planning and execution, as the schoolhouse was hoisted onto a semi-truck after disconnecting utilities. This meticulous operation was overseen by local experts, including Fred Christian from C & A Building Movers, ensuring the preservation of the 1840s structure.

The new park, located at the intersection of Mound and 31 Mile roads, is set to feature a play structure, pavilion, and pickleball courts, enhancing community recreational opportunities. Additionally, an apple orchard will be planted, thanks to generous donations from local orchardists. The township acquired the schoolhouse for $125,000 with the support of a majority vote from the Board of Trustees, according to The Detroit News.

This revitalization project emphasizes community involvement, as residents rally to restore this historical gem. Sam Previti highlighted the collaborative spirit that has driven this initiative, stating, “This is about preserving our history and fostering community pride.”

Students from Romeo High School are also playing a crucial role in this project. They are engaged in hands-on learning opportunities, helping restore the schoolhouse and uncovering artifacts like a fourth-grade test dating back to the 1930s. These educational experiences will not only preserve history but also inspire future generations.

The emotional impact of this project resonates deeply within the community, as residents witness the revival of a landmark that represents their shared heritage. The Thorington Schoolhouse, once forgotten, is now poised to become a focal point of community activity and pride.

As the park’s development progresses, officials encourage residents to stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming events related to the project. The revitalization of the Thorington Schoolhouse is not just a restoration of a building; it is a celebration of community spirit, history, and collaboration.

This project is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. With the park set to open soon, residents are excited to witness the transformation of their neighborhood into an engaging and historical space.
