Urgent Rescue: NYC Hiker Lost in Hudson Valley Wilderness
UPDATE: A 57-year-old hiker from New York City was rescued after becoming lost in the rugged wilderness of Ulster County, New York, triggering an urgent winter rescue operation late yesterday evening.
According to officials from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the visitor had been staying with a friend near the base of Samuel’s Point in the Town of Olive. As the sun set behind the Catskills, the hiker ventured off the trail, relying on a cell phone map to navigate through challenging terrain. However, cell service vanished, leaving the hiker disoriented and without guidance as temperatures plummeted.
In a desperate move, the lost hiker activated a satellite messenger feature on their phone, sending a distress text to a friend in New York City instead of directly contacting emergency services. Fortunately, the friend promptly alerted 911, mobilizing a rescue team.
DEC Rangers utilized the coordinates provided by dispatch to locate the hiker at 7:45 PM. The hiker was found cold, hungry, and exhausted but was provided with warm clothing and food. Rescuers successfully guided the hiker back down the mountain, reaching safety by 9:00 PM.
As winter conditions take hold in the Catskills, Rangers emphasize the critical importance of preparation for hikers. “Now is not the time to wing it,” said a DEC official. Hikers are urged to check the latest weather and trail conditions as even short climbs can become hazardous with icy or snowy conditions that arise suddenly.
For those planning to explore the outdoors this season, the DEC offers essential winter safety tips on its website.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with winter hiking and the importance of having proper navigation tools and emergency plans in place. Share this story to raise awareness about winter hiking safety!
