UPDATE: Major traffic disruptions are set to hit the Kīlauea area starting December 1 as the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) initiates permanent striping of the Kīlauea Roundabout. The closure of Kolo Road access to Kūhiō Highway will commence daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., impacting weekday commuters until December 12.

Residents and visitors should prepare for detours as HDOT aims to minimize disruptions during peak travel hours. Traffic will be rerouted, and local residents are advised to utilize alternate routes via Pili Road and Hoʻokuʻi Road during the construction hours.

This project is critical for enhancing traffic flow and safety at this busy intersection, which is pivotal for local mobility. HDOT emphasizes the need for drivers to allow extra travel time and remain vigilant for temporary traffic changes throughout the duration of the work.

As the striping project progresses, officials stress that the closures are essential for worker safety and the overall improvement of the Kīlauea traffic system. With these adjustments, authorities are hopeful for a smoother flow in the long term.

Motorists are urged to stay informed about the ongoing changes and to plan ahead, especially as holiday travel approaches. This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
