Travel Tuesday Deals Surge, But Consumer Caution Urged
UPDATE: Travel Tuesday is here, bringing a wave of discounts for holiday travelers, but experts warn consumers to be vigilant. With airlines, hotels, and tour operators promoting one-day deals, the urgency to book is palpable.
On November 28, 2023, travelers across the United States and Canada will be inundated with offers ranging from discounted flights to hotel stays. The event, which follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday, has gained traction since its inception in 2017, when data revealed it as the most significant day for post-Thanksgiving travel discounts.
Consumer advocates highlight both potential savings and risks. “Many see ‘40 percent off’ and think it’s a steal, not realizing the original price may have been inflated,” warns Sally French, a travel expert at NerdWallet. She emphasizes the importance of research before diving into deals, particularly with hidden fees and blackout dates that could undermine advertised savings.
Travelers planning to book last-minute trips for Christmas or New Year’s should scrutinize offers closely. Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer expert with Hopper, advises, “Watch for nonrefundable fares and extra fees that may not be immediately clear.” This year, travelers should be particularly cautious as many companies use perks and bundled offers to mask higher base prices.
The excitement around Travel Tuesday stems from its ability to drive significant booking increases. According to a McKinsey & Company report, hotel, cruise, and airline bookings rose sharply on Travel Tuesday 2023 compared to the weeks before and after. “Last year, nearly three times as many trips were planned on Travel Tuesday than on Black Friday,” Schwimer noted, highlighting the growing influence of this shopping day.
The holiday season typically sees slower travel bookings, making Travel Tuesday a critical moment for businesses to boost revenues. While the event is primarily North American, European travel companies are starting to take notice, anticipating similar trends across the Atlantic.
As consumers navigate this landscape, they’re armed with more tools than ever. Vivek Pandya from Adobe Analytics states, “Social media, influencers, and AI platforms are shaping a new dynamic for consumers, allowing them to evaluate deals more effectively.”
Experts emphasize that the holiday season is not the only time for significant deals. “If you miss out on Travel Tuesday, don’t worry. There are many opportunities throughout the year,” French adds.
Travelers are encouraged to approach deals with a strategic mindset. Comparison shopping and understanding typical costs will help expose inflated offers. French advises, “Make sure the trip aligns with your genuine desires, not just a countdown timer’s pressure.”
As Travel Tuesday unfolds, consumers are reminded to remain informed and cautious. With the potential for genuine savings mixed with marketing tricks, a well-researched approach is vital for securing the best deals this holiday season.
