UPDATE: Texas transportation and law enforcement agencies are launching an urgent crackdown on drunken driving just in time for the holiday season. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has kicked off its “Drive Sober. No Regrets” campaign, which runs from December 12 through January 1, a period notorious for increased alcohol-related crashes.

During the 2024 holiday season, Texas recorded over 2,000 drunken-driving crashes, resulting in 96 fatalities and 201 serious injuries. Officials stress that these tragic incidents are entirely preventable, underscoring the critical need for responsible driving during celebrations.

The Garland Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies in North Texas, is ramping up DWI patrols during this high-risk period. Officers will utilize both marked and unmarked units, particularly during nighttime hours, to ensure safer roads.

Authorities warn that a first-time DWI conviction can lead to staggering financial repercussions, including fines of up to $17,000, legal fees, and increased insurance costs. These expenses can escalate with additional costs such as bail and court-ordered programs, pushing the total impact beyond $17,000.

TxDOT and local police are actively promoting strategies to avoid dangerous situations. They recommend planning for a sober ride before drinking and taking advantage of resources like the Dallas County DWI taskforce. This taskforce is providing digital ads in both English and Spanish, featuring QR codes that offer discounts of $20 or more for rideshare services like Lyft.

As the holiday festivities continue, safety officials emphasize that making smart choices can save lives and prevent devastating consequences. The message is clear: celebrate responsibly and ensure you have a plan to get home safely.

Stay informed and share this vital information with friends and family to help keep everyone safe this holiday season.
